Each of these pieces is handmade and unique. I start by conducting research into the character, finding references for the drawing. I then sketch the character and get approval from the client. After that, I use tracing paper to create a pattern.
I select each of the papers, looking to color match as closely as possible for accuracy. I try to include interesting textures and patterns, so sometimes accuracy is sacrificed for creativity.
Using the pattern I made, I hand transfer the shapes to the back side of the paper. I use an x-acto knife to cut the pieces by hand.
With pieces cut out, I move on to coloring and shaping. Sometimes I'll fold and roll pieces to add extra dimension. I add color, shading, and highlights (depending on the series art style, usually) with watercolor pens, colored pencils, and acrylic paint pens.
The last part is piecing everything together. With the character finished, I can move on to the background.
I don't usually plan out the background ahead of time. It's an abstract process where I compare color, texture, and patterns of both paper and washi tape. When I settle on a color scheme, I start experimenting with combos and shapes until I find something I like.
Eventually, I'll have a background and I can place the character. After that, the piece is finished.
Depending on the size and complexity of the piece, it can take anywhere from 8-60 hours. It's a very thorough and time consuming medium.
If you have any questions or are interested in commissioning a piece of your own, please let me know.
